What Is a Float Pod?

A float pod is a private, enclosed tub with about 10 inches of skin-temperature water and roughly 1,000 pounds of dissolved Epsom salt (magnesium sulfate), so you float effortlessly on your back.

Light and sound are reduced as much as you like. Researchers call this Floatation-REST (Reduced Environmental Stimulation Therapy).

A typical float session is about 60 minutes.

At Hidration, the float pod is a lounge amenity at Atlantic Park — not a mobile service. Pricing will be shared when booking opens.

What the Research Says

What Many Clients Use Floating For

—— โœฟ ——

Floating is one of the better-studied lounge amenities. Small clinical studies have looked at stress, mood, muscle tension and sleep. Results vary from person to person.

Stress Relief

In studies, a single float session was linked to short-term drops in self-reported stress and anxiety. Many clients use floating to decompress after a hard week.

A Calmer Mood

Participants in float studies often report feeling more relaxed, calmer and in a better mood right after floating.

Muscle Tension

Floating takes pressure off joints and muscles. In small studies, people reported less muscle tension and discomfort after a series of floats.

Better Rest

Some studies report improved self-rated sleep quality after a series of floats, so some clients like to float in the evening.

Quiet Focus

With almost no light or sound, many clients use floating as uninterrupted time to rest, reflect or meditate.

Active Recovery

Athletes and active guests often add floating to recovery days for the weightless, low-impact rest.

Most studies are small and short-term. Floating is a relaxation practice, not a replacement for care from a licensed mental health or medical provider.

At the Lounge

How a Session Works

—— โœฟ ——

Before You Float

  • โœ“We walk you through the pod and answer first-timer questions.
  • โœ“Shower first so the water stays clean for every guest.
  • โœ“Use the earplugs we provide; petroleum jelly can cover tiny skin nicks so salt doesn’t sting.

During the Float

  • โœ“You lie back and float in warm salt water inside a private pod.
  • โœ“Keep the lid open or closed and the light on or off — your choice. You can sit up or step out anytime.
  • โœ“Soft music signals the end of your about 60 minutes.

Afterward

  • โœ“Shower again to rinse off the salt, then hydrate.
  • โœ“Many guests say they leave feeling calm and reset.
  • โœ“Take a few quiet minutes in the lounge before you drive.

Prepare

How to Prepare

—— โœฟ ——

Before Your Float

  • โœ“Skip shaving or waxing for 12–24 hours — salt can sting fresh skin.
  • โœ“Have a light snack about an hour before; avoid a big meal or lots of caffeine.
  • โœ“Remove contact lenses, or bring a case.

Bring / Know

  • โœ“We provide towels, earplugs and shower products.
  • โœ“Freshly colored hair can bleed into the water — wait a few washes after coloring.
  • โœ“Bring a brush or comb for after your shower.

Safety First

Is Floating Right for You?

—— โœฟ ——

Floating is gentle, but a few conditions mean you should wait or get your provider’s OK first.

Please Check With Your Provider First

  • โœ“Pregnancy (many guests float in pregnancy, but check with your OB or midwife first)
  • โœ“Low or high blood pressure, or heart conditions
  • โœ“Kidney conditions (because of the magnesium sulfate in the water)
  • โœ“Severe claustrophobia, or a mental health condition you are being treated for
  • โœ“Ear infections or ear tubes

Not Recommended If Youโ€ฆ

  • โœ“Have open wounds, recent tattoos or piercings still healing, or an active skin infection
  • โœ“Have epilepsy or a seizure disorder that is not well controlled
  • โœ“Have a contagious illness, including stomach illness
  • โœ“Are under the influence of alcohol or drugs
  • โœ“Are incontinent

Questions

Float Questions

—— โœฟ ——

When can I book a float?

The float pod opens with our Atlantic Park lounge in Winter 2026–2027. We cannot book it until then. Text 757-434-8059 or call to join the interest list.

I’m claustrophobic. Can I still float?

Many people can. The pod is roomy, the lid can stay open, and you can keep a light on and sit up anytime. If you are unsure, start with a shorter float.

Can I fall asleep or drown?

Many people doze off. The water is so salty you stay on the surface; if you roll, the salt in your eyes usually wakes you. Floating is not recommended if you have uncontrolled seizures.

Is the water clean?

Yes. The high salt content, plus filtration and sanitation between every guest, keeps the water clean. You shower before and after.

Do I wear a swimsuit?

Most guests float without one in the private room for comfort, but a swimsuit is fine.

How many floats should I try?

Many people say floating gets easier to relax into after the first two or three sessions; studies often use a series of floats.

Can members use recovery credits?

Yes — recovery credits for float will apply once the lounge opens. Exact credit amounts will be confirmed at opening.

Where is the lounge?

Atlantic Park, 415 19th St, Suite 106, Virginia Beach, VA 23451. Mobile IV appointments are available now.
