Cold Plunge and Contrast Therapy: A Beginner's Guide to Hot + Cold

Virginia Beach surfers know the feeling of paddling out on a chilly morning: a jolt, a deep breath, then that wide-awake buzz. Cold plunging captures that feeling on purpose. Pair it with sauna warmth and you've got contrast therapy, one of the recovery rituals we're most excited to bring to our Atlantic Park Longevity & Recovery Lounge.

What is a cold plunge?

A cold plunge is just what it sounds like: a short, intentional soak in cold water, usually up to your shoulders. Sessions are brief, measured in minutes, not hours.

Athletes have used cold water as part of their recovery routines for a long time, and cold plunging has become popular with runners, lifters, surfers and anyone who wants a reset. Research on cold water immersion is ongoing and the results are mixed, so we won't promise specific outcomes. Many people tell us they feel alert, refreshed and clear-headed afterward.

What is contrast therapy?

Contrast therapy means alternating heat and cold. At the lounge, that looks like time in the HaloSauna followed by a cold plunge, repeated a few times. Many people love the rhythm of it: warm and relaxed, then cool and energized.

A simple beginner round might look like this:

• Warm up in the sauna.
• Take a short, comfortable cold plunge.
• Rest, breathe and let your body rewarm.
• Repeat if you feel good, and finish however feels best to you.

We'll walk you through it on your first visit.

What a first plunge feels like

The first few seconds are the hardest. Cold water triggers a natural "cold shock" response: you may gasp, your breathing may speed up and your heart rate may jump. That's why we encourage slow, steady breathing as you lower in.

Start short. Your first plunge can be very brief, and that's completely fine. Many people find it gets a little easier each time.

Safety first

Cold exposure is a real stress on the body, so a few ground rules:

• Talk with your healthcare provider first if you have a heart condition, high blood pressure, Raynaud's, a circulation or nerve condition, or if you're pregnant.
• Never plunge after drinking alcohol.
• Enter slowly, keep your head above water and get out any time you want.
• If you feel dizzy, numb, confused or unwell, get out and let our team know.
• Rewarm gradually afterward with dry clothes, gentle movement and a warm drink.

Building it into your routine

Some people plunge after a workout or a surf session, some on rest days, and some just for a mood reset. There's no single right way, and how often you plunge is up to you and your provider.

Contrast therapy also pairs nicely with other lounge services. Some clients like to follow a session with a Hydration Recovery or Athlete Performance IV drip, after a quick health screening.

Our lounge memberships, including the Recovery Club, use recovery credits: one credit covers a cold plunge, and two credits cover a sauna + cold plunge session. See current pricing on our memberships page (https://hidrationiv.com/pages/founding-circle).
