Botox® & Jeuveau® vs. Dermal Fillers: What's the Difference?

"Should I get Botox or filler?" It's one of the most common questions we hear, and the honest answer is that they do different things. Here's a simple guide to wrinkle relaxers like Botox® & Jeuveau®, dermal fillers like Juvéderm® and SKINVIVE™, and what to expect at your appointment.

Wrinkle relaxers: Botox® & Jeuveau®

Botox® & Jeuveau® are prescription wrinkle relaxers. Both are forms of botulinum toxin type A, made by different companies. They soften the look of expression lines, the ones that form when you frown, raise your eyebrows or squint, by temporarily relaxing the muscles behind them.

Popular areas include:

• the "11s" between the eyebrows
• forehead lines
• crow's feet around the eyes

Results typically start to show within several days and build over about two weeks. They're temporary, so many people come back every few months to maintain their look. Results vary.

Pricing is $13 per unit for non-members. The number of units depends on the area and your goals, and your injector will recommend an amount at your consultation. A typical full-face treatment is 64 units, though the injector will specify your treatment recommendations at your consultation. Ask us about member pricing.

Dermal fillers: Juvéderm® and SKINVIVE™

Fillers work differently. Juvéderm® fillers are hyaluronic acid gels. Hyaluronic acid is found naturally in your skin and attracts water. Filler adds volume and structure where it's been lost, or gently enhances a feature. Options include:

• Juvéderm® Voluma® XC for the cheeks and chin
• Juvéderm® Volbella® XC for the lips and fine lines around the mouth
• Juvéderm® Volux® XC for jawline definition

SKINVIVE™ by Juvéderm® is a little different. It's placed as tiny microdroplets just under the skin's surface to improve the smoothness of the cheeks. It isn't meant to change the shape or volume of your features, just how smooth and hydrated your skin looks. According to the manufacturer, optimal results typically appear 2 to 4 weeks after treatment and can last up to 6 months.

Results from filler can often be seen right away. See current pricing on our filler menu (https://hidrationiv.com/products/juvederm), and ask about our pay-over-time options.

The quick comparison

• Wrinkle relaxers soften lines caused by movement. Fillers restore volume, contour or skin smoothness.
• Wrinkle relaxers take several days to show. Filler is often visible right away, while SKINVIVE™ builds over a few weeks.
• Many people use both. Your injector will help you plan.

What to expect at your appointment

• Consultation. You'll talk with a licensed injector about your goals and health history, and wrinkle relaxers start with a consultation with our provider.

• Safety review. Your injector reviews risks, aftercare and the manufacturer's safety information with you before treatment.

• Photographs. Your injector will take front-facing and profile pictures of your face for your treatment record and to provide you Before & After images.

• Treatment. Appointments are often quick; a SKINVIVE™ session takes about 15 minutes on average. Some fillers, including SKINVIVE™, contain lidocaine to help keep you comfortable.

Aftercare basics

Your injector will give you instructions for your specific treatment. In general:

• After a wrinkle relaxer, avoid rubbing or massaging the area and skip strenuous exercise for the rest of the day.
• After filler, minimize strenuous exercise, lots of sun or heat, and alcohol for the first 24 hours.
• Some redness, swelling, bruising or tenderness can happen and usually settles within about a week.

Call us right away if you notice increasing pain, skin color changes or signs of infection. Seek medical care immediately for vision changes, or for trouble swallowing, speaking or breathing.

These treatments aren't right for everyone, including people who are pregnant or nursing, have certain neuromuscular conditions, or have a history of severe allergies. Share your full health history at your consultation.
